Ground Rules For Site
Planning In Vaastu.
To create a controlled and balanced flow of
positive energies in a plot or house, based on the nature and the
mechanisms of interaction between solar energy and geomagnetic
sources, some important ground rules have to be applied before
planning construction. Before planning a site for construction,
let us understand, interpret and apply the following guidelines
in its true spirit so that the planning and designing of a
prosperous building becomes a reality.
- The geometric axis of the house should
be aligned with the geomagnetic axis of the site.
- The site should be a quadrangle with
the Northeast angle measuring 90º or less, the Southeast
and Northwest angles 90º or more, and the
Southwest angles should be a right angle (exactly
90º). It should be ensured that the diagonal measurement
from the Northeast corner to the Southwest corner is more
than that from the Southeast corner to the Northwest
corner and never less.
- The site should slope towards the
Northeast corner and the ground level should be highest
at the Southwest corner.
- There should be more open space left
towards the East and North.
- The North-South axis should be longer
than the East-West axis, for both the house and the plot.
- The major part of the building or
construction should be located in the Southwest zone of
the plot and more open spaces should be provided in the
Northeast.
- Soil analysis should be carried out
before construction. Soil not having the desired
characteristics as per Vaastu Shastra should never be
used for ground filling.
- Excavation work during construction
should commence from the Northeast side and move in an
anti-clockwise direction towards the Northwest and then
move diagonally to the Southeast and finally to the
Southwest.
- Construction activity should commence
from the Southwest direction and move towards the
Southeast, then diagonally to the Northwest and finally
to the Northeast.
- To get rid of any ill effects of
adjacent plots and their domain, it is necessary to have
compound walls built before commencing any other
construction activity. The Southern and Western compound
walls should be thicker, heavier and higher, and should
be constructed of stone; whereas the Northern and Eastern
compound walls can be lower in hight, thinner and can be
fence-like, depending on the ground levels, slope and the
nature of the terrain of the adjacent plot.
- The Southern walls should not have any
debilitating door or window openings. The wall in this
direction should be either an 18" thick construction
or a double wall with a cavity in between.
- The maximum number of doors, windows,
openings and ventilators should be provided in the
Northeast, North and East.
- The number of doors and windows should
be even and not odd; but should not be a figure ending in
zero like 10, 20, 30, etc.
- The open space in the Northern and
Eastern sides can be used for car parks, lawns and
gardens with small plants.
- The number of columns and beams in a
house block should be even and not odd; but not in
figures ending in zero.
- Cellars should be avoided in the
Southern and Western sides. Cellars can be provided in
the Northern and Eastern portion of the building.
Mezzanine floors can be provided in the Southern and
Western directions only.
- The North or East side of the cellar
must be used as car parks and the South and West should
be used for storage. The Southeast corner of the cellar,
if necessary, can be used for a transformer or generator.
- The Southwest plinth level should be
at least 9" higher than the other plinth levels and
the ground should slope towards the North and East
through the entire building.
- Parapet walls on the South and West
side should be higher and heavier than those on the North
and East. Roofs should have slopes towards the Northeast,
East and the North. Roofs should not slant towards the
South and West.
- The North and East of the house should
be used for placing light weight items while heavy and
rigid things should be placed in the South and West. This
principle is applicable to the entire building, house,
rooms and even partitions.
- Rainwater drainage should be directed
towards the Northeast corner of the plot. The lift should
be located towards the Southwest corner, in the West or
South.
- The security rooms should not touch
the compound walls in the Northern or Eastern sides and
should be provided in the West or South of the main gate.
- Big trees or heavy avenues of trees
should be located in the Southern and Western side;
whereas lawns and light gardens with small plants can be
grown in the Northern and Eastern side.
- Garages are to be provided in the
Northwest sector or in the Southeast sector and they
should not touch the amin building. Septic tanks should
be provided only in Northwestern sector.
- Bore Wells, Wells underground sumps or
any other water bodies like swimming pools, small ponds,
etc, should all be located in the Northeast corner of the
plot. There should not be underground sumps or water
storage in the West, South, Northwest or Southwest.
- The main door of the house should
preferably be located in any of the exalted positions
from the Northeast corner - either from North of
Northeast or from North of Northeast. Doors can also be
in the South of SouthEast or West of Northwest but in no
case, should the main entrance be from the center of any
direction. Also the main entrance or door should be
avoided in all the following four directions, namely,
North of Northwest, East of Southeast, South of Southwest
and West of Southwest. There should not be any
obstruction or water body just opposite the main entrance.
- Balconies should be planned towards
the East and North and should be definitely avoided in
the South and West. If balconies in the South and West
cannot be avoided, then larger balconies must be provided
towards the North and East. Care should be taken while
providing balconies so that a cut or truncation is not
created in the Northeast corner.
- The kitchen should be ideally situated
in the Southeast corner of the house and as an
alternative in certain cases, may be in the Northwest
corner, but in both cases, the cooking platform should be
arranged to facilitate cooking while facing East only.
The Kitchen should never be in the Northeast corner and
it should also be avoided in the Southwest too, as both
locations will create problems with respect to the health
and finance of the inmates.
- Rooms in the West and East can be used
for dining. The appetite can be stimulated in the dining
hall by having the walls painted in light pink or orange.
A rectangular dining table is the most preferred. In the
dining room, while eating, one should sit facing East or
West.
